The Beauty of Winter

Hello, and welcome to the February edition of “The Brambles Journal” – The Beauty of Winter. This month I’m really excited to share pictures of the crocuses that have sprung up all over the garden. They look amazing! There is nothing more wonderful in February than crocuses in the sunshine.

Also this month catch up on the blackbirds, more unusual visitors to the garden, a favourite recipe and a trip back in time to last year to see what was happening.

Find out all about the beauty of winter in the garden below :)

It took me a while to find the most suitable magazine viewer for my purposes. If you find it’s not compatible with your browser, please try a different one. I have seen some intermittent issues with Chrome. You can also view this month’s journal in Ficker: The Brambles Journal February 2017

This month’s magazine was created with a mix of wonderful graphics by DaisyTrail, Lynne Anzelc Designs and commercial use graphics and fonts available from Design Cuts. I also used a flower graphic found on Reusable Art. All the photos, the text and poem are my own.

  1. Another great and interesting issue Tasha -super photos – your flowers are lovely.
Most of our bulbs seemed to have died off over the last few years and need replacing.
How lucky you are getting Bullfinches – the last time I saw one I think was in the 1970s
and I’ve not seen a Goldcrest for ages.
Your poem was really beautiful and also really sad but of all he poems I’ve read of yours so far
this one is my favourite (probably because its about Blackbirds)
will look forward to next months issue now….Gill x

  2. Thank you Gill for your lovely comments :) The crocuses that come up must have been there for a long time, and so far they’ve always come back well. I’ve not had the same luck with the daffodils that I planted. Although the squirrels like to dig them up and munch on them! There was a pair of bullfinches around last summer and I’m hoping that they’ll return this year. Before then I’d seen a male just a handful of times. A lot of my favourite poems are sad, so it’s not surprising some of mine end up that way too! It’s one of my favourites as well :) It’s so lovely to hear that you’re looking forward to next month :)

  3. Your magazine makes wonderful reading Natasha I have thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish..I could talk about it for ages … the layout the photography are all exquisite also the word search and the recipe …..the crocus look wonderful we have snowdrops and daffodils and our crocus are just starting to come out…..no bees yet I think its colder here. we had snow yesterday brrr..today the sun has been shining all day I think with it being the 1st of March St. Davids Day has got off to a good start…….your so lucky to have the song thrush and gold crest and chaffinches…we do get the bluetits and robins plenty of blackbirds and bullfinches…. and plenty of crows…what we don’t get now are many starlings which I am pleased really as there were to many of them the sparrows and other little birds never got a look in….
I was reading the part about the Hydrangeas it just so happened we visited a place on Monday and the amount of snowdrops and daffodils were like a huge field every where you went they were there then as we turned into another part there in front of us were the big brown beautiful hydrangeas….as you said in your magazine they look very vintage….on this note I will finish as I think this might turn into a book lol. I look forward to the next magazine..xx

  4. Thank you Mary for your wonderful comments :) I’m so pleased to hear that you’re enjoying it and looking forward to next month :) All the spring flowers are amazing. I think they are just that bit more special after the winter when there aren’t so many flowers about. The burst of colour is just the best. You had snow! It’s been too wet here for that at the moment. The song thrush is quite a singer, and quite loud too! It sounds like you have quite a selection of birds. The ones in my garden come and go. There was a treecreeper the first year here, but I’ve not seen one since then. Sometimes I only hear the wren and don’t see it. I understand that’s quite usual. We often don’t realise we have them near as they “hide” a lot! I always get excited when I see a starling as they don’t visit the garden that often! In the mornings when I’ve just put the food out the magpies and woodpigeons take over. They are just doing what they do best :) It sounds like an amazing place you visited. How wonderful to see all those flowers and hydrangeas too.
